It seems as if George Russell is poised to be more of a true teammate, instead of a rival, to fellow Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton.
Speaking ahead of the weekend’s opening GP in Bahrain, the 24-year-old said he looked forward to competing alongside Hamilton, and that he had looked up to the Brit as a sort of “superhero” as a child.
Russell is currently preparing for his first campaign as a full-time driver with his new team. But while Russell is very much only now at the start of his F1 career, he comes exceptionally highly rated. So much so, that he’s expected to pose a serious challenge to the seven-time world champion.
Of the possibility of a rivalry, Russell said whichever way the season unfolds, Hamilton, who is statistically regarded as the greatest driver of all time, has nothing at all left to prove. The young contender said Hamilton only wants to help him succeed, and that this places him in a win-win situation with the team.
Russell pulled out all the stops during his three seasons with Williams. He impressed by repeatedly bringing out the best performance in a car stuck at the back of the grid.
But perhaps his most notable moment came when he stepped up to the tall challenge of standing in for Hamilton at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix. Had it not been for a team pitstop error and a late puncture, he would have won the race.
